An unlikely friendship develops between an American expatriate and a Mexican revolutionary as they embark on a perilous journey to rescue a kidnapped schoolteacher in Mexico.

School teacher Harriet Winslow is kidnapped by Mexican revolutionaries, led by Gen. Tomas Arroyo, while teaching in Mexico. She meets an aging American, Ambrose "Old Gringo" Bierce, who is hiding his identity as a famous writer due to a terminal illness.
