A young man, Casper van Riel, is raised by his single mother Marit, who keeps his father's identity a secret. When Marit falls ill with cancer, Casper's friend helps him search for clues about his father's identity, leading them to conclude that the father is Robert van Laren, a renowned international photographer. Meanwhile, Casper is a talented pianist who composes a symphony for his girlfriend Anouk, but is unable to perform it at a prestigious concert in Prague due to his frequent absences from rehearsals.
