In the village of Nelakondapalli, a talented young singer named Mallamma lives with an elderly caretaker. When they visit a wealthy family to seek permission for her education, the matriarch becomes enraged after hearing Mallamma's song, as her own daughter cannot sing. The matriarch bans Mallamma's music and threatens her life. After her house is burned and her caretaker is killed, Mallamma is rescued by a music master and sets out to Delhi to find help from Jawaharlal Nehru.
