Gene Autry and his partner Buffalo Brady's ranch is plagued by cattle rustlers. They and their cowhands pursue the thieves, while Gene and his sidekick Frog Millhouse track down the culprits separately. In a series of hilarious misunderstandings, Gene and Frog mistake the clothes of notorious outlaws Jed and Jim for those of two deputies they have killed. They put on the outlaws' clothes, and a sheriff's posse mistakes them for the wanted men. Local rancher Joe Stafford, who is actually the leader of the rustling gang, helps them escape. Gene and Frog arrive at Stafford's hacienda, where they meet his cook, niece, and step-daughter, as well as Jed and Jim, and a group of singing cowhands.
