In the 1950s, a young apprentice magician flees her wealthy politician fiancé in Mexico to learn ancient magic from a Mayan shaman. Pursued by a detective hired by her fiancé, a traumatized former photojournalist, the magician and detective embark on a search for the shaman. As they journey together, the detective falls for the magician, but his feelings are unrequited.
