Portuguese-Canadians Icelia and her 10-year-old daughter Monica move from Toronto's inner city to the suburbs after a bitter break-up. Icelia's brother Albert, who lives with them, becomes Monica's reluctant guardian and chauffeur. While Icelia works to make ends meet, Albert secretly associates with Monica's father, Vincent, for favors. Monica, fascinated by Catholicism, longs to attend her old school and be a guardian angel in the church's processional. She steals angel wings and meets a homeless, devout woman named Mary, who teaches her that there's more to life than just focus.
