In 1862, Martha and Jed Richards relocate to Oregon, seeking a fresh start, but tragedy strikes when their two daughters succumb to cholera en route. Devastated, Martha becomes emotionally numb, struggling to move forward. The arrival of orphan Danny, whom Jed warmly welcomes as his son, initially finds Martha unable to reciprocate the affection. Yet, as time passes, she gradually comes to accept Danny as a part of their family, slowly healing from her grief.
