A young boy from a close-knit African American family of sharecroppers navigates the challenges of growing up in poverty-stricken rural South during the Great Depression, as his father is sent to prison for stealing food to feed his loved ones.
In 1933 Louisiana, a sharecropping family's life is turned upside down when the patriarch, Nathan Lee Morgan, is wrongly convicted and sent to a prison camp, leaving his wife and children behind.
