Growing up in Memphis, Will Handy is torn between his preacher father's expectations and his own passion for music. He's drawn to the rhythms of the city's streets and workers, and eventually writes a theme song for a local politician. This leads to a chance encounter with Gogo, a sultry speakeasy singer who convinces Will to join her as her accompanist. As Will's music career takes off, he becomes estranged from his father for many years, only to be reunited when Gogo brings him to New York to witness his blues songs being performed by a symphony orchestra.
