A 10-year-old boy lives with his father in a remote shed near a wildlife sanctuary, where they support themselves through fishing. The boy, who is illiterate and isolated, befriends an Aboriginal loner named Fingerbone and takes in three pelican chicks whose parents were killed by hunters. Despite his father's initial reluctance, the boy cares for the pelicans, which eventually grow up and require more food than the family can provide.
