Jim "Sundown" Saunders wins a horse race and receives a deed to a 640-acre ranch in the Panamint. He and his friend Smokey head to the ranch, where they meet the Prestons, who are planning to buy the ranch from a government land agent named Taggart. However, Taggart has ulterior motives and hires a man named Jack Mace to pick a fight with Sundown.
