In the California back hills, a 17-year-old girl named Lou is warned by her aunt that she'll "never find a man" due to her spunk. Meanwhile, a city woman named Evelyn is unhappy with her rural life and watches as a plane flies overhead. Her husband, Jugger, threatens to kill her if she tries to leave him. The story follows Frank, a city bank teller, who comes to the country for a hunting vacation and becomes involved in the lives of the Phelps and Sutton families.
