A group of elderly British women, known as the Scorpioni, live in Florence, Italy, blending their British sensibilities with their love of Italian art and culture. One of them, Mary Walsh, becomes the guardian of Paolo Innocente's illegitimate son, Luca, who has lived in an orphanage since his mother's death. As World War II breaks out, the Scorpioni are taken into custody by the Italians, but are eventually housed in a hotel. Luca, now a teenager, helps Elsa Morgenthal, a Jewish-American woman, assist those persecuted in Italy, and falls in love with her. However, Elsa's situation becomes more precarious as the war escalates, and Luca must navigate his own emotions and the complexities of war.
