In this fictional film, real-life celebrities play themselves in a staged setting. J.D. Forbes, head of Four Star Studios, tries to revive the studio's declining business by adapting a popular radio and live theater program, "The Kollege of Musical Knowledge," hosted by band leader Kay Kyser. When Kyser's band is offered a movie deal, they're excited to work in Hollywood, but Kyser is initially hesitant, citing his grandmother's advice to stay in his own backyard. Delmore recognizes the need for a rewrite and a series of fictional events unfold.
