Moll Flanders, based on Daniel Defoe's 1722 novel, follows the adventures of Kim Novak's titular character, a maid who marries an imbecilic second son, then becomes maid-companion to a Count and his Lady, and weds a rich banker before leaving him on their first night. She joins a group of thieves, falls in love with James "Jemmy" Seagrave, and becomes their valuable asset before being sent to prison. After her release, she reunites with Jemmy and boards a boat to America, while the banker, who had planned to alter his will, dies of a heart attack before he can do so.
