A naive American missionary, Megan Davis, arrives in Shanghai during the Chinese Civil War to marry a fellow missionary, Dr. Robert Strife. However, their wedding is postponed when Robert rescues orphans from a burning orphanage. Megan is separated from Robert and injured, but is saved by General Yen and brought to his palace. As she recovers, Megan forms close bonds with the General's mistress, Mah-Li, and later with General Yen himself, who has fallen in love with her. Despite her feelings for the General, Megan is torn between her Christian values and her attraction to him.
