A corrupt mayor's hasty decision to appoint a novice lawyer as sheriff backfires when the lawyer's exceptional detective skills lead to the swift resolution of a murder case, earning the mayor's regret.

Tom Brewster, a skilled roper, arrives in town and submits his lawyer's exam. However, his ineptitude with a gun is soon revealed, and he's offered the position of Sheriff by town boss Turlock, which he initially declines. When the mail is stolen, leaving him without a job, Tom reconsiders and takes on the role. Despite Turlock's miscalculation, Tom, now gunless, sets out to track down the killer of the former Sheriff and uncover the surprising truth.
