A Japanese soldier in World War II, Mizushima, is tasked with convincing a group of Japanese troops to surrender, but they refuse, opting to die with honor instead. The failure weighs heavily on him, leading him to become a Buddhist monk and spend his days burying the remains of fallen soldiers, unable to reconnect with his former comrades.
