A fainthearted cigar trader named Ducker remains silent during World War II, until a parachutist named Dorbeck lands in his backyard, looking eerily like himself. As Ducker follows Dorbeck, he becomes embroiled in the Dutch resistance and eventually takes up arms, killing people in the process. After escaping through German lines to the liberated South Netherlands, Ducker discovers that no one has ever heard of Dorbeck.
