In 1960s Spain, an aging executioner, proud of his tradition-bound profession, worries about who will take his place and his daughter's future. His daughter is shunned by potential suitors due to her father's occupation. The local undertaker, also with a profession that scares off potential partners, catches her eye. As they're both outcasts, they seem destined for each other. However, the old executioner proposes a condition for their marriage: the undertaker must take over his executioner role when he retires.
