In the small town of Weaverton, a mysterious circus arrives, sparking the curiosity of the local children. Two brothers, Tommy and Ben, are dared to climb Thunder Mountain, where they claim to have seen a giant. They return with a wooden figure, which they claim is from the giant's cabin. Their story is met with skepticism by Zeke MacGruder, but they convince him to join them on a journey to prove their tale. Along the way, they meet Eli, the giant, who is kind and gentle. As they help him with his chores, they discover his stash of gold nuggets. However, their discovery is soon followed by a series of events that lead to the town's misunderstanding of Eli, resulting in him being pursued by a posse.
