The movie follows the lives of four Chinese immigrant women, Suyuan, Lindo, Ying-Ying, and An-Mei, who have been best friends since meeting at church thirty years ago. They have led parallel lives, each with a US-born daughter around the same age. After Suyuan's passing, her daughter June is expected to join the mahjong table with the other women, where they share stories of their lives and cultural traditions.
