In a small Georgia town, 12-year-old Frankie Addams feels disconnected from the world due to her unconventional views and being ostracized by her peers. She finds solace in her younger next-door neighbor John Henry, but her widowed father is consumed by work, leaving her in the care of their housekeeper Berenice. Berenice tries to offer guidance, but Frankie sees her as a crazy Black woman and doesn't take her advice seriously. When Frankie's older brother Jarvie returns from the military and announces his engagement, she sees an opportunity to fit in by leaving town with them. However, two negative situations that follow the wedding could ultimately lead Frankie to find her place in life.
