France, in the 1760s. Born to a bourgeois family, Suzanne is a beautiful young girl with a natural talent for music. She is sent to a convent, expecting to become a nun. Despite initial resistance, Suzanne discovers she's an illegitimate child, leaving her no choice but to pronounce her vows. She tries to revoke her vows but is met with cruelty from the new Mother Superior. Eventually, Suzanne is transferred to another convent where she finds a different kind of Mother Superior who develops an inappropriate bond with her.
