Christine, a Julliard student, discovers an unknown piece of music by Erik Destler in her friend Meg's library and decides to use it in her audition for a role in Faust at the New York Opera. During the audition, an accident occurs and Christine faints, reliving her past life as a 19th-century opera singer in London. She becomes the protégée of the Phantom of the London Opera House, revealed to be Erik Destler, who made a pact with the devil to ensure his music would be loved. However, the devil's curse left him disfigured and unloved. After a tragic ending, Christine awakens in the present day, only to be surprised by the opera's producer.
