In the early 20th century, a cheerful and mischievous rickshaw driver named Matsugoro, known as Matsu, is well-liked in his village. After rescuing an injured boy, Toshio, Matsu befriends the boy's family, the Yoshikos. When the boy's father, Captain Kotaro Yoshioka, passes away, Matsu helps raise Toshio alongside his mother, Yoshiko. As time passes, Matsu develops romantic feelings for Yoshiko, but hesitates to express them due to their differing social backgrounds.
