In the 1930s, after his mother's passing, Sven is employed as a farm-hand at the affluent Höglund's farm, where he works without pay and shares a bed with the cows. It is there that he meets Anna, a kind and compassionate individual who treats him with respect and dignity. Eventually, Sven decides to leave the abusive environment and finds a new home with Anna's family.
