Author Tony Barratt and his wife Dora return to his country home in Connecticut, seeking inspiration for his new book about local immigrant tobacco farmers. However, his wife leaves for New York, and his Japanese servant deserts him, leaving Tony to face new challenges. He meets and hires Manya Novak, a charming farm girl, to cook and clean for him. Despite falling in love, their romance is threatened by Manya's arranged marriage to Fredrik Sobieski, a man she doesn't love.
