In 1936 Shanghai, a crossroads of global politics, a Russian Countess named Sofia finds herself stateless after the Revolution. To support herself and her family, she becomes a bar-girl and taxi dancer. Sofia forms a connection with Jackson, a blind former diplomat who owns a sophisticated bar called The White Countess. As their bond grows, they become entangled in the city's tumultuous fall to Japanese invaders.
