Tommy Woodry, a 9-year-old known for spinning tall tales, convinces his family to relocate from Manhattan to a ranch in the west. However, when the landlord interrupts dinner to show them their soon-to-be-vacated apartment, the Woodrys put a stop to Tommy's fabrications. Feeling rebellious, Tommy decides to sleep on the fire escape outside the Kellerson's apartment, seeking a breeze. That night, he witnesses the Kellersons murdering a man, but his parents and the police dismiss his account. The Kellersons, determined to keep the truth hidden, will stop at nothing to silence Tommy.
