In a predominantly Latino neighborhood plagued by crime and poverty, a passionate new teacher, Griffin Byrne, takes on the challenge of transforming the lives of his students. He becomes particularly invested in Lee Cortes, a talented cartoonist who is struggling to find his voice due to a troubled home life. Lee's older brother, a drug dealer, subjects him and their mother to abuse, causing Lee to retreat into his own world. Despite the skepticism of others, Griffin tries everything to help Lee, even going so far as to take him in and offer him a safe haven. However, he soon realizes that the root of Lee's problems runs deeper than just his individual circumstances, and that solving the family's issues may be beyond his power.
