Where the Spirit Lives background

Where the Spirit Lives

A Native Canadian woman's life is irreparably altered as she's torn from her tribe and compelled to attend a residential school, putting her cultural heritage and personal identity at risk of erasure.

A young First Nations girl named Ashtecome is kidnapped from her village in 1937 as part of a Canadian policy to assimilate indigenous children. She's forced to adapt to Western ways and learn English at a boarding school, where she faces brutal treatment.
