In 11th century Russia, the Kievan Rus is a collection of principalities governed by the sons of Grand Prince Vladimir of Kiev. Princes collect tribute and send it to their father in Kiev. Prince Vladimir sends his son Yaroslav to rule in Rostov when he's 11, where he grows under the tutelage of boyars. As he grows older, Jaroslav takes power, expanding the principality and attaching new lands. However, his task is complicated by bandit gangs that rule the woods, roads, and rivers, engaging in the slave trade and selling people to the Bulgars and Khazars.
