Widowed Joanne Kilbourn, a former police officer, works as a criminal justice expert for a TV news show and a journalism professor. Her life is going well until the Dean of the School of Journalism, Reed Gallagher, is found dead in a motel room with a pair of pantyhose around his neck. Initially thought to be accidental auto-erotic asphyxiation, the police later determine it was murder. As Joanne insinuates herself in the investigation, she discovers that Reed was known for cheating on his wife with multiple students and faculty members, giving anyone affected a motive.
