Twelve-year-old Ben, neglected by his parents, befriends Cassie, a girl who survives a car crash in front of his parents' dining spot. Cassie, who's obsessed with freedom, convinces Ben to hitchhike with her to Baltimore to live with her modern aunt and uncle. Along the way, they experience a journey of self-discovery and friendship, but their adventure takes a turn when Cassie has a breakdown and is hospitalized.
