A 16-year-old Parisian schoolgirl named Anouk develops a crush on a young man named Laurel, whom she barely knows. She secretly follows him until he suddenly leaves for Brazil, where he plans to travel overland to New York City. After his money and luggage are stolen, Laurel becomes depressed and eventually returns to Paris. Inspired by his story, Anouk decides to continue his journey from Mexico, documenting her adventures with a videocam and sending the tapes to Laurel.
