In 1296, Marco Polo returns to Venice with his father and uncle after a 25-year journey to the East, sharing tales of untold riches. The Duke of Venice is skeptical, but Marco's stories are soon put to the test as war breaks out between Genoa and Venice. Marco fights in the war, meets a writer and sailor named Rusticello, and is eventually captured by the Duke and Duchess of Genoa. While imprisoned, Marco shares his incredible adventures with the Duchess, including his encounters with Kublai Khan. Years later, the war ends, and Marco is released. Rusticello presents him with a book about their travels, which becomes one of the most influential works of the Middle Ages.
