A Chinese police officer is reassigned to Lavernia, a fictional East European country, as a consequence of disobeying orders during a plane hijacking incident. While serving in his new post, he crosses paths with his former lover, who had fled to Lavernia after the Tiananmen Square protests. Their lives become entangled with the enigmatic and malevolent leader of the Japanese cult, Aum Shinryuu.
