In 1902 Vienna, Alma Schindler, a young and talented musician, meets Gustav Mahler and becomes his lover, then wife. She sacrifices her own composing dreams to support his career, but her life becomes stifling. After the death of her child, she falls in love with Walter Gropius and begins an affair with Oskar Kokoschka. Eventually, she leaves Gropius for Franz Werfel, who helps her to share her music with the world.
