A cynical journalist, Buckley, is awarded a medal in Paris for being rescued from a kidnapping, only to discover his boss is dating his ex-girlfriend. Fired from his job at the Chicago Globe, Buckley concocts a scheme with his friend Lefty to fake a news story about the last Romanoff's assassination, but the plan goes awry and they find themselves in danger of being executed by the Commissar.
