Caucasian teacher Pat Conroy starts a job teaching at a small poor school on Daufuskie Island, inhabited exclusively by Black people. He learns his students lack basic understanding of academics and life skills, such as personal hygiene. Conroy decides to expose his students to various subjects and life skills, including classical music, art, and swimming, with compassion and without being patronizing. His teaching methods are questioned by the school principal and district administration, putting his tenure at risk.
