In the late 1960s, an adolescent nicknamed Misty reflects on a transformative summer at a Catholic orphanage in the Australian outback. He and his best friends, the "December boys," were born in December and shared a special bond. With a recent windfall, the orphanage granted them a group vacation for each of their birthdays at Lady Star Cove, where they stayed with the McAnshes.
