In 1930s Berlin, a Russian émigré and chocolatier, Hermann, leads a comfortable life with his wife Lydia. As the Nazis rise to power, Hermann's Jewish heritage troubles him, and he becomes fixated on an unemployed vagabond named Felix, who bears a resemblance to him. Hermann's obsession grows, and he concocts a plan to eliminate his old self and start anew.
