In the early 1900s, entrepreneur Diamond Jim Brady proposes a revolutionary idea: building steel railroad cars. He offers to ride a train of steel cars across a wooden trestle to prove their safety. As the train approaches the test, Jim reflects on his life and loves, including the beautiful Sarah and his dashing best friend Mark. After a successful crossing, Jim celebrates with friends and acquaintances, including a singer and a boxing companion. However, tragedy strikes when Mark and his girlfriend Lillian are caught in the San Francisco earthquake, and Jim suffers a heart attack. Meanwhile, Jim's younger brother Dan's evil deeds ultimately lead to his own downfall.
