Peter Finch's character, a colonial tea planter, wins the heart of Elizabeth Taylor's character, a lovely English woman, and brings her back to his Ceylon plantation, Elephant Walk. However, their new life is disrupted by the elephants' grudge against the plantation, as well as Ruth's feelings of isolation, her husband's occasional arrogance, and her growing attraction to the plantation manager, Dana Andrews' character.
