Forgetting the Many: The Royal Pardon of Alan Turing

The film "Forgetting The Many" tells the story of Alan Turing, a groundbreaking computer scientist, and the 49,000 others who were unfairly convicted of "gross indecency" due to discriminatory laws.

The film "Forgetting the Many" tells the story of a decade-long struggle to reform British law and expunge the records of men convicted of "gross indecency" under a 1885 law that criminalized male homosexual acts. The struggle is personal, as it is tied to the life of Alan Turing, a brilliant computer pioneer and code-breaker who was charged with "gross indecency" in 1952 and chose chemical castration over prison, ultimately leading to his devastating death in 1954. Despite the decriminalization of homosexual acts in 1967 and the repeal of the 1885 law in 2003, the criminal records of those convicted remained, until a posthumous apology and pardon were issued to Turing in 2013. Now, a new law will allow all men convicted of consenting same-sex behavior to apply to have their convictions disregarded and removed from the records, freeing them from the long shadow of criminality.
