In the 1860s, a ranch hand named Mike Reno gets into a fight over unpaid wages and then loses his earnings in a saloon. He's arrested and joins Aaron Pleasant, a man awaiting a death sentence, in a prison wagon bound for Huntsville. Marshal Gideon McCool, tasked with transporting the prisoners, recruits Mike as his temporary deputy in exchange for a 100-dollar payment. Together, they pick up two more prisoners - a corrupt railroad official and a Mexican goat thief - and a saloon entertainer who killed her lover. The group faces a three-day journey to deliver the prisoners to the Huntsville state prison.
