A young Ukrainian-American man named Yaro travels to the Carpathian Mountains in 1939 to learn about his roots and find a true Ukrainian wife. He meets a group of strong and educated women who run a local hotel and an eccentric professor searching for a rare butterfly. Yaro must marry within a year or his fortune will go to a distant relative. He falls in love with a Hutsul girl named Ksenya and must reconsider his plans as the Soviet occupation of Western Ukraine approaches.
