If This Be Sin background

If This Be Sin

On the idyllic Isle of Capri, a repressed wife discovers freedom in a passionate affair with a captivating younger partner. However, their all-consuming love is short-lived, as the husband's discovery sparks a tumultuous showdown with their daughter.

This romantic drama, set in the style of Chekhov, explores themes of love, disillusionment, and hope. Russian-born director Gregory Ratoff, who favored this genre, had wanted to film the play since the 1930s, but finally did so in 1949 while working in Europe. The story originated as a Russian stage play at the Moscow Art Theater in 1915, and Ratoff was likely familiar with it even before emigrating from Russia.
