In Search of Liberty Bell 7

The film chronicles the quest to locate the vanished Liberty Bell 7, a Mercury spacecraft commanded by Gus Grissom, which vanished in the Atlantic Ocean following its splashdown.

In 1961, the United States sent its second astronaut, Virgil "Gus" Grissom, into space. His 15-minute flight went smoothly until the capsule splashed into the Atlantic Ocean. While waiting for a Navy helicopter to retrieve him and the Liberty 7 spacecraft, the explosive hatch suddenly opened, filling the capsule with water and dragging it down. Grissom escaped the craft, but the chopper was unable to save the capsule, and it was eventually cut loose to sink into the ocean. After decades, efforts were made to locate and recover the space capsule, with the successful retrieval in 1999 marked by a thrilling adventure and a look back at the Liberty Bell 7's historic flight 35 years earlier.
